About Us

Who We Are Founded in 2009, Voices of Recovery San Mateo County (VORSMC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to advocating for and supporting the recovery community—individuals overcoming drug and alcohol addiction, as well as their families. We believe that hope is the foundation of recovery, and we nurture it through peer leadership, lived experience, and unwavering support.

Each year, we empower more than 3,500 individuals and families to build healthier lives through recovery programs, peer support, and community advocacy. With a dedicated team of full-time and part-time staff, including twelve Certified WRAP® Facilitators and six Peer Support Specialists, we work tirelessly to ensure recovery is not just possible, but sustainable.

Mission

Our Mission Voices of Recovery San Mateo County (VORSMC) creates peer-led opportunities for education, wellness, advocacy, and support services for individuals in or seeking long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions—equally extending these opportunities to families and loved ones impacted by addiction.

We coordinate local, state, and federal advocacy efforts, collaborating with treatment providers, recovery groups, faith-based organizations, and community partners to strengthen the recovery movement.

Vision

We envision a community where every individual affected byaddiction has access to the resources, support, and opportunities neededto achieve and sustain long-term recovery. Our vision is rooted in inclusivity, resilience, and empowerment—fostering a culture whererecovery thrives.

Our Story

In 2008, San Mateo County commissioned a needs assessment toexplore how peer-led recovery services could bridge service gaps andstrengthen the treatment system. The findings were clear: our communityneeded support for newcomers to recovery, long-term advocates, andresources for families impacted by addiction.

In response, a steering committee of peers and advocates came together, and in October 2009, Voices of Recovery San Mateo County opened its doors in a donated space. From those humble beginnings, we have grown into a countywide leader in peer-led recovery, creating opportunities for hope and change every day.

The Wellness Recovery Action Planning Program

At the heart of our programs is Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP), an evidence-based program that helps individuals identify personal wellness goals, create strategies to manage challenges, and sustain long-term recovery.

Our peer specialists and facilitators provide:

  • Relapse prevention support
  • Family-centered resources for loved ones
  • Peer-led workshops and community groups
  • Outreach and advocacy to reduce stigma and promote recovery-friendly policies
